Turffontein Race 5

Play Soccer 6, 10 And 13 Mr 74 Hcp

Stake: $10,761

NARETOI (10) has built the right platform with a long-neck second and a one-length third at Turffontein Inside, both in BM74 grade, and that consistency gives him the most reliable winning case. The step to 2400m is the one qualification after one unplaced try around the trip, but his current form and strong record with Jason Gates make him the horse to beat. FUTUREWOLFF (1) has been safely held at Vaal lately, yet drops out of Open and BM86 company, has won twice at the distance and gets an apprentice claim, so he has the back class to rebound. TWELFTH OF NEVER (8) comes off a solid third in FM BM72 grade and has already won this season, though the quick turnaround and first attempt around 2400m make her slightly more complex. EUPHRATES (3) is honest, was second to Utsaah over 2600m last start and has a deep record around this distance, so he profiles as a genuine place chance with enough substance to threaten if the others leave the door open.

Has finished sixth at his past two starts, most recently beaten just over three lengths in a BM84 over 1800m at Turffontein Inside when sent out at big odds. He does return to a distance where he has won, but Naretoi had his measure recently and barrier 11 makes the task no easier. A sharper finish is required to trouble the main chances.

Expected Settling Position: Leader

Kept finding the line when second to Utsaah in a BM80 over 2600m at Turffontein Inside, beaten just under three lengths at generous odds. Two back he was fourth to the same winner in Open company at Vaal, beaten three and a half lengths. His record around 2400m is solid and his partnership with this jockey reads well, so he shapes as a genuine place hope.

Expected Settling Position: Midfield

Has been well held in two runs since winning, finishing sixth in a BM74 over 1800m at Turffontein Inside last start, beaten just over seven lengths at big odds. The run prior at Vaal was no stronger despite market support. He has not raced around 2400m before and was behind Naretoi last time, leaving him with plenty to find.

Returns from a five-week let-up after a much better second in Open company at Vaal, beaten a length and a half by Utsaah after firming from opening levels. That followed a heavy defeat in BM86 grade, so the latest run is the one to assess. He has placed once from three tries around 2400m and is race fit, which gives him sound each-way claims.

Worked back into the placings when third to Utsaah in a BM80 over 2600m at Turffontein Inside, beaten three and a half lengths at generous odds. His previous sixth in BM86 grade at Vaal was only fair, but his overall record of one win and five placings from 11 starts points to a horse who usually gives a sight. He appeals more for the minors than as a clear top pick.

Improved into third in a FM BM72 over 2000m at Turffontein Inside last week, beaten just over four lengths behind Elisa Mbali after starting at long odds. She had been last in a small FM BM86 at Vaal the run before, but the margin was not severe. The quick back-up and first try around 2400m are questions, yet her current-season record gives her a live winning chance.

Finished fifth to Utsaah in a BM80 over 2600m at Turffontein Inside last start, beaten seven lengths despite firming from bigger odds. His previous sixth in Open company at Vaal was similar on the margin. The return to a distance where he has won and the 4kg claim are positives, but his latest performances still leave a sizeable improvement task.

Expected Settling Position: Pace

Comes through two strong BM74 efforts at Turffontein Inside, finishing second by a long neck before a one-length third behind Rock My Boat. He was respected in the market both times and has placed twice from three starts with Jason Gates, including a win. The move to 2400m is the query after one unplaced try, but his recent consistency makes him the one they have to beat.

Expected Settling Position: Off Pace

Returns from a three-month break after finishing second last at Vaal, beaten a long way in Open company when easing from opening levels. He had won a BM72 over 2600m at Turffontein Inside before that, beating Party Punch by three and a half lengths, and owns a win at this track and distance. Even so, he resumes off a poor run and looks risky.

Expected Settling Position: Midfield
